The inspiration behind this issue came from society’s collective fear of death, and the urgent need to readdress our relationship to the subject. Death is such a huge part of life, yet we only seem to acknowledge mortality when someone close to us dies. Our language around mourning stifles our ability to properly process grief; we’re expected to get over it and move on.
This issue of Hate includes artwork, photography, poetry, short stories, features and interviews covering a range of experiences surrounding death.
Journalist Cristina Cromer recounts her cat’s poignant and meaningful death and Oppose magazine’s editor, Dalia Dawood, explores gentrification and the death of local neighbourhoods.
Features include artist and disability rights campaigner Vince Laws, playwright Molly O’Shea, Solomon Grey musician Joe Wilson who travelled with his mum to Dignitas, Dignity In Dying campaigner Ellie Ball, Birthstrike founder Blythe Pepino and teenage environmentalist, Cate Davies, from UKSCN.
